The reality you experience isn't the base layer of existence. It's an advanced simulation — like a video game, except we're inside it.

If we're in a simulation, we're not here for decoration. We're agents in a lab, and drives are hard-coded into us so the simulation's creators can learn. But it doesn't serve us to dwell on being lab rats. So there's a more useful way to look at it: as a game. Games are designed to be played.

If we are agents in a lab, then certain drives are hard-coded into us so we move, act, and make choices the creators can learn from. Reproduction and raising children is one of those drives. Even people who say they never want kids because they just want to "have fun" often regret it later — which shows the hard-coding was there all along, but they got swayed by the cultural currents.

In that case, culture isn't just a byproduct of human actions. It can be a deliberate variable introduced by the creators. They can push an idea into the culture, then watch what happens when it collides with our biological drives. For example, if the culture tells people to avoid kids and chase shallow pleasure, the simulators can observe how many people regret it, how societies change, and what long-term effects appear. We become a massive A/B test for social engineering.

But it does not serve us to look at the simulation as a lab — because it's a lab for the simulators, not for us. A far more useful view is to look at it as a game.

Every explanation for existence — God, the Big Bang, evolution — eventually runs out of facts and relies on belief. Nobody knows the truth of why anything exists. We all live inside a story about how reality works.

The rational move is to hold the story that explains the most and helps the most. That's what this is — not a claim of certainty, but a claim of usefulness. You don't have to believe it's true to get value from it.

There is a philosophy that says everybody is deluded — because to call someone deluded, you have to know the truth, and nobody does. Science keeps overturning itself. The Big Bang is challenged, evolution is challenged. So in a sense, we all live by unprovable beliefs. And that's not a bad thing. A delusion is required to maintain sanity. We each need an anchor to operate from.

The only real choice is which story to hold. I've chosen the one that explains the most, gives life meaning, turns challenges into opportunities, and removes the fear of death. That has proven more useful than any other worldview I've tried. And whether you ever believe it's literally true, the practical value survives on its own.

The speed of light is our horizon — parts of the universe move away from us faster than we can ever travel. The boundary is built into the fabric itself, so we can never touch the edge.

If we designed a sophisticated simulation, we would stop its inhabitants from discovering what exists outside it. The boundaries would be carefully constructed so those within can't break through. Look at our video games: the characters don't know they're in a game, and they can't escape. Their limitations are built into the fabric of the game itself.

Our universe has the same feature. The speed of light — about 299,792 kilometres per second — is the maximum speed at which information or matter can travel, according to Einstein's relativity. Nothing can exceed it. And remarkably, the universe itself is expanding at or beyond that speed. Based on observations of distant galaxies, we know regions of space are moving away from us faster than we could ever reach, even with light-speed technology.

That creates a horizon beyond which we cannot see or explore. We are, in effect, sealed inside a boundary. If our world were a simulation, we would expect exactly this — a built-in limit we can never cross. For me, that's one of the signs we live in one.

Atoms are mostly empty space. If an atom were a football stadium, the nucleus would be a pea at the centre. You are not solid matter — your sense of physicality is an illusion, like objects inside a game.

This concept is hard to grasp because our everyday experience says objects are solid. But quantum physics reveals that atoms — long thought to be the indivisible building blocks of matter — are almost entirely empty space.

Compare it to a video game. The objects in a game aren't made of any physical matter; they're pixels, tiny points of light on a display. Yet the characters interact with them as if they were solid and real — they lift, push, and carry items that, from our perspective, are nothing more than patterns of light.

Our physical reality shares this when we zoom in to the subatomic level. If an atom were the size of a football stadium, the nucleus would be a pea at the centre, with electrons whizzing around in patterns defined by quantum mechanics. The rest would be essentially empty.

So fundamentally, we aren't made of solid matter the way we perceive it. Our sense of physicality is an illusion based on how these particles interact — just like a game object's "solidity" is an illusion to its own characters. That's a striking parallel.

Particles exist as waves of probability until they're observed — then they collapse into place. Reality renders itself when needed, and stays a blur when it isn't. That's how a game saves processing power.

The double-slit experiment is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics, and it demonstrates that particles don't behave as we'd expect — especially when they aren't being observed.

Scientists fire individual atoms or photons toward a barrier with two slits. When the particles aren't observed, they behave as waves, passing through both slits at once and creating an interference pattern behind them. But when a measuring instrument is placed to track which slit each particle passes through, they suddenly act like solid particles, going through one slit or the other.

The act of observation changes the outcome. It's as though the particles "decide" to be particles only when they're being watched. This hints that reality may not be fixed and tangible — it may only take a definite form when we actively observe or interact with it.

That's exactly how a modern video game renders to save processing power: only the parts of the world the player can see or interact with are rendered in detail. When particles exist as waves of probability, they require far less processing. When observed, they collapse into a specific state — effectively rendering themselves into existence, just like the game world renders when the player needs it. Reality may be a cloud of probabilities when we're not looking, rendered into solidity when we are.

Apple's headset only renders the spot you're looking at in full detail; everything else is blurred. Your eyes do the same. It's a processing shortcut — not what evolution would ideally design for survival.

When using the Apple Vision Pro and doing a screen recording, people made an interesting discovery: the object or area the user is focusing on is rendered in high definition, while everything else in the field of vision is blurred and low resolution. This selective rendering wasn't widely known before release — people figured it out by examining their recordings.

This might seem like a technical detail, but it mirrors how human vision works. When you focus on an object, it's rendered sharply while your peripheral view is blurry. Our eyes have limited focal precision, so they naturally prioritize clarity in the direction of our gaze and leave the rest less defined.

Now, someone might say that's how our eyes evolved. But consider evolution from a survival angle: what would be better for survival — seeing only what you're looking at, or the entire field clearly? Going back thousands of years, it would surely have helped to spot predators coming from the side. Our eyes should have evolved to see the entire field, yet they don't.

The explanation that sits well with me is that our visual system is simply a method to conserve processing power — just like the Vision Pro, and just like a simulation. There's no need to waste energy rendering everything in high definition unless it's necessary for the "user" — us — to focus on it.

You can only ever experience life from your own perspective, like a protagonist. No matter how empathetic you are, you're bound to your point of view — because in your reality, you're the one the game revolves around.

We experience life from a single-person point of view — our own — just like a protagonist in the video games we create. In any given video game, there's usually one protagonist, and the entire game revolves around that character. Everything else — the environment and the non-player characters — exists to make the game meaningful for the protagonist. Only the protagonist has "autonomy" within the game.

In real life, we can only ever operate from our own point of view. You might believe you're empathetic or selfless, capable of putting yourself in someone else's shoes, but that's ultimately mental gymnastics. No matter how hard you try, you're bound to your perspective, because in your own reality, you are the protagonist of your simulation.

Life, as it seems, mirrors the way we design video games. I am the protagonist in my simulation — and you are the protagonist in yours.

There will never be a time when all your problems are solved. That's not a bug — it's the essence of any game. A life with no obstacles would be the most boring, hellish thing imaginable.

Take any video game we create. There's always a challenge for the protagonist to conquer. This challenge isn't just a feature — it's the essence of the game. Without it, the game loses all meaning.

Consider a car racing game. However much you dislike the obstacles — other cars blocking you, bumping into you — the thrill comes from overcoming them. Now imagine a game with no other cars, no twists, no obstacles — just a straight, empty road you drive forever. How dull would that be? No one would play it, because it would be utterly meaningless.

Life operates the same way. Every one of us — perpetually — faces some problem to solve. There will never be a time when all your problems are solved and there is nothing to overcome. And this is not a burden — it's a gift. These difficulties give life meaning and purpose.

If there were no problems to solve, no challenges to rise above, no desires pushing us forward, life would be just as boring as that empty road. Life without obstacles would be nothing short of hellish. In this way, life's design mirrors a well-crafted game — another sign we live in a computer simulation.

Before I learned Spanish, I couldn't even tell where one word ended and the next began. When I started learning, the "simulation" rendered it for me. Skills only need to make sense once you engage with them.

Consider any complex skill — learning multiple languages, mastering a musical instrument. You might marvel at how the human mind can learn something so intricate, and wonder how it's possible. But here's where simulation theory gets interesting.

If we live in a simulation and we are the protagonists of our own reality, then only the languages we speak and understand need to be fully rendered. The simulation doesn't have to create or sustain thousands of languages for the protagonist's environment if they won't be used by anyone relevant. Languages like Chinese or Japanese don't need to make sense to you unless you start interacting with them.

When I see Chinese characters, I wonder how those symbols could possibly form a language. In simulation theory, they don't have to make sense — for me, that language doesn't "exist." But if I decided to learn Chinese, the simulation would need to render it in a way that made sense. The "gibberish" would transform into a meaningful system.

This happened to me with Spanish. Before I could understand it, Spanish sounded like a string of meaningless sounds — I couldn't even identify where one word ended and another began. As I started learning, individual words and phrases emerged from the confusion. The simulation, so to speak, had to "render" the language for me. Now I hear distinct words instead of just sounds. The same applies to any complex skill — it only needs to make sense once you decide to pursue it.

Every looming catastrophe — climate change, resource depletion — keeps getting averted just before the tipping point. In a game, total destruction means the game ends. So there's always a way out.

Scott Adams highlights a pattern he calls the Law of Slow-Moving Disasters: whenever humanity faces a looming catastrophe — climate change, depletion of fossil fuels, some other large-scale crisis — it always seems that, as long as the disaster is several years away, humanity finds a way to prevent or mitigate it.

The situation looks dire, but just before the crisis hits a tipping point, a solution or breakthrough emerges. This could be more than human ingenuity — it could be a feature of the simulation itself.

Video games are designed to challenge players with seemingly catastrophic scenarios. The protagonist often faces overwhelming odds or existential threats. But the game is structured so there's always a path to victory, some way to avert total destruction. Why? Because if the world in the game were completely destroyed, the game would end. There'd be no point in continuing.

In the same way, if we live in a simulation, complete destruction of the human race would defeat the purpose. Just like in a game, there will always be an out, a way to avert total disaster. Climate change is not going to destroy us. Fossil fuels running out is not going to destroy us. We should still take issues seriously and try to solve them — but thanks to this belief, I'm not at all worried about an apocalyptic ending.

You're right, there's no proof — and there may never be. Here's why that's not the point.

Most people think AI and humans are fundamentally different. I don't. They run the same underlying mechanism — only the scale differs. An LLM predicts the next word. A human is a Large Action Model. A human? We just run on a permanent prompt: stay alive, learn, avoid danger, seek pleasure, reproduce, never stop.

People point out what they think is the biggest difference: "An AI needs a prompt; a human doesn't." But I think humans simply run on a permanent prompt.

Imagine creating an AI and giving it instructions that never disappear: stay alive, learn, explore, avoid danger, seek pleasure, find a mate, reproduce, protect yourself, never stop. Now don't ask it another question ever again. Just let it exist. It keeps observing, learning, acting, and updating its understanding. From the outside, nobody is prompting it. From the inside, it feels like motivation and ambition. Humans look exactly like that.

The line between artificial intelligence and natural intelligence may never have existed. Every breakthrough in AI removes another mystery we thought belonged only to biological intelligence. Ironically, AI didn't convince me that machines are becoming human — it convinced me that humans may have been computational systems all along.

We're already building simulations ourselves — AI, video games, virtual worlds. One day we'll build one whose characters believe they're conscious, just like us. So the simulation that created us could itself be the creation of another simulation, continuing infinitely. We are simulations creating simulations.

If you're religious, you might say God created everything. But if God created us, who created God? Follow the chain and you get an infinite regression. The same happens here — if we are a simulation, then who created the simulators? Another simulation, most likely, and so on forever.

The difference is that, in the simulation view, this regression is natural rather than mysterious. Just as a character in our video game looks at its world and can't see the game's creators, we look at our world and can't see our creators. The "future" is in the past — and has likely happened an infinite number of times.

To call someone deluded, you have to know the truth. But nobody knows the truth. Science keeps overturning itself. If you're certain today's truths can never fall, that makes you deluded. You can't be free of delusions; you can only choose yours.

Richard Dawkins wrote a book called The God Delusion, so atheists believe people who believe in God are deluded. I believe we live in a computer simulation, so someone who believes in God could call me deluded, and I could call the Big Bang believer deluded.

But the one who believes in the Big Bang thinks he's the most rational person. Yet if science finds a hundred years from now that the Big Bang was wrong, wouldn't today's believer be rendered deluded after the fact? In order to conclude something is a delusion, you must hold the truth — and nobody does.

So if nobody knows the truth, then whoever believes they know the truth is deluded. Which means everybody is deluded. And if everybody is deluded, then delusion is not a bad thing — it's required to maintain sanity. Without an anchor, without some foundational belief, you'd go crazy. Whatever your foundation is, by definition, is a delusion. You can't be free of delusions; you can only choose yours.

Descartes said: I think, therefore I am. If you are choosing what to think, you exist as a self-aware, autonomous agent. Determinism may be true at the particle level, but that standpoint is irrelevant to us.

Free will, like everything else in a simulation, is an illusion we live by. If you accept any of reality as real — which you must, to live — then accept free will the same way. We get to pick our position. Why not pick the one that makes life meaningful rather than the one that makes living pointless?

There are two ways to look at reality. One is from a macro lens, almost like a god's perspective — the universe as a pool table after the first strike, every outcome already set in motion. The other is the human, micro lens — the one we actually live in.

From the human perspective, we don't have access to the full state of the universe. We don't know all the variables. We can't predict outcomes with certainty. So we must act as if our choices matter. Even if determinism is true at some ultimate level, it becomes irrelevant to how we live — because even that belief, and your decision to adopt it, would also be predetermined. That's an absurd loop.

The ancient Stoics had it right. Zeno of Citium said to imagine yourself as a dog tied to a wagon. Your options are constrained by accidents of birth and fortune, but the best approach is to accept your fate and run with the cart rather than be dragged — while still testing how much slack there is in that rope.

And consider crime and punishment. If determinism is strictly true, a criminal could not have done otherwise. So on what basis do you assign blame? Determinism, followed to its logical end, breaks down here. Yet most people who claim to believe in determinism still believe in justice. If everything is predetermined, then both the crime and the punishment are predetermined — so there's no point in moral paralysis. What matters is meaning. And meaning emerges only when you believe your actions matter.

Finding conviction in this has been the single most positive shift in my worldview. Since I adopted the mindset a few years ago, I haven't had a day where I've felt overwhelmed by sadness or depression. Now, I'm not saying I never get sad — of course sadness is part of life. But it's the kind of sadness you feel when something happens to your character in a video game. You're disappointed, sure, but deep down you know it's not real. You understand the nature of the game.

This realization has been profoundly liberating. Instead of feeling crushed by difficulties, I remind myself that the game is designed with the player in mind. There's always an exit strategy, always a way to win, no matter how impossible things seem. That's why I'm eternally optimistic — like there's no other way to be.

I'm not religious in the traditional sense, but I believe wholeheartedly that everything happens for good — because of the simulation view. Picture Super Mario. Whether you win or lose depends on how well you play and how much you learn from your experiences.

Sadness and depression creep in when you feel lost. But when you realize it's all part of the game, and that the game is set up for you to ultimately win, it becomes like a sport. Failures stop feeling like failures. They become lessons, stepping stones toward the eventual win. Every hardship makes you stronger, every setback sharpens your resolve. Imagine living inside a cube of possibilities, where every possible outcome for you exists somewhere in it. Elon Musk is human — so that outcome exists in the cube for any human, including you. The question is not whether it's achievable. It's whether you're willing to pay the price in effort.

Imagine you are living in a cube of possibilities where every possible outcome for you is there. Let's look at Super Mario. If you tried to map all the possible moves the character can make, it would be very difficult. So imagine a cube, place Mario at a certain latitude and longitude in that cube, and from there all the possibilities become accessible to him.

Now consider our lives as something similar to a video game. We exist within our own cube of possibilities. Elon Musk is the richest person in the world — and since he's human, that outcome exists in the cube of possibilities for any human, including you. Mr. Beast, the biggest YouTuber, is human too, living in the same world. That too is in the cube. You can become that — but it requires a very high price.

Notice I'm not using the words "easy" or "difficult." I've come to believe that nothing is inherently easy or difficult to achieve. Every goal lies somewhere in the cube; it's just that certain outcomes carry a higher price tag than others. And the currency for that price is your effort.

Since embracing this, I've stopped seeing the world in terms of what I can and cannot do. I've adopted a new frame: everything is possible, but some things require a higher price. It's not about whether something is achievable — it's about whether I'm willing to pay for it. It has changed everything for me.

A game without challenges would be the most boring game no one would play. A life without problems would be the most boring life. Suffering — desires, anger, envy, sadness — is what gives life meaning. Happiness is what you feel when you overcome suffering.

There was a time when my goal was to reach a state where I wouldn't feel any negative emotions — no anger, envy, disappointment, or sadness. But I realized that if you reach a state where you don't feel negative emotions, you won't feel positive ones either. If you don't feel sadness or suffering, you can't feel happy either.

Happiness is what you feel when you overcome suffering. Desires, difficulties, and inconveniences are types of suffering, and when you solve them, you feel positive, successful, and happy. I don't want to be vegetation — which is what I'd become if I didn't feel anything.

My goal is not to attain a state with no suffering, but to reframe suffering as positive. Here's suffering? That means here's an opportunity to take action, solve the problem, and feel happy. That's the reframe. The cycle of learning and working to solve suffering so you can be happy is life. Not feeling suffering at all is not.

Knowledge is a treadmill — today's solid truth gets falsified tomorrow. What matters more is your intentions. When you know a path is harmful but choose it anyway, you feel guilt. That's a signal you're choosing the wrong path. The takeaway: you almost always know what the right thing to do is. Choose the right path, and life will reward you.

Most people believe the formula is Knowledge + Action = Success. But in a simulation, there is no such thing as "solid" or immutable knowledge. Even our most solid truths — the laws of physics, nutritional science — change constantly. Newton's laws were the ultimate truth until Einstein. Decades ago, seed oils and the food pyramid were considered healthy; today the science has flipped. In a simulation, it's possible the reality itself is simply being updated to throw new challenges at us.

The Intentionality Model says knowledge acts as a filter that renders your reality. If you're convinced to your core that sugar is poison, that knowledge is rendered into your reality — if you eat it, it harms you. But you may see people in remote villages who consume sugar or smoke profusely and remain healthy. In their reality, that specific harm hasn't been rendered because the knowledge is absent.

The simulation may reward you based on your intentions relative to the knowledge you possess. When you know a path is harmful but choose it anyway, you feel guilt — a signal you're intentionally choosing the wrong path. Conversely, someone who lacks that knowledge isn't intentionally choosing wrong; they're doing what they believe is right, so they may still receive positive outcomes.

The takeaway is powerful: you almost always know what the right thing to do is. If you want to lose weight, you know to exercise. If you have a choice between junk food and healthy food, you know which aligns with a good life. Knowledge is a great pursuit, but it's secondary. Focus on your intentionality — always strive to choose the right path — and life will reward you with success, happiness, and fulfilment.

Roughly 20% of people achieve 80% of outcomes. It's an underlying law of existence — almost as if it's embedded in the code. But those 20% aren't chosen at random. Success begets success. So start small, and keep building until it snowballs.

In any group activity where outcomes depend on human effort, roughly 80% of the work is produced by about 20% of the participants. This is the Pareto distribution — and it's not limited to corporations. A small number of wealthy people own most of the wealth. A handful of star players score most of the goals. A tiny number of musicians create most hit songs.

Even on a cosmic scale, a tiny number of massive celestial bodies hold the bulk of the universe's mass. It almost feels like an underlying law of existence — as if we were living in a simulation and the Pareto principle is embedded in the code.

Now, are these top 20% chosen at random? Absolutely not. Over multiple iterations, the effort required decreases while the probability of success increases. Once you start succeeding in one area, success becomes more likely in others — "the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer." Success begets success.

So to achieve massive success, you must first start succeeding, even in small ways. Begin with small, achievable goals. Get a taste of success by accomplishing something within reach, and keep building until it snowballs. As momentum grows, the effort required from you decreases. Start small, and start today.

Take a simple example. You left your keys somewhere, you need them urgently, and you can't find them. What do we usually do? We get frustrated. We start cursing. But instead, smile. Recognize this is a test from the universe, and deal with it calmly. Calmly keep looking. If you find them, good. If you actually lost them outside, getting frustrated won't make it better — in fact, it's likely to spoil your next task and the mood of whoever lives with you.

Whether you find the keys or solve the problem, that's beside the point. You passed the simulation's test if you remained calm. Master this cheat code, and life becomes easy and enjoyable.

don't_be_desperate

The universe tends to give you what you want when you're no longer desperate for it. When you scramble for something badly, you tend not to get it — it's almost coded into the design.

But when you make peace with not having it, and find happiness without it, that's when it comes walking to you. Finding peace has to happen first.

You must have observed that the universe tends to give you what you want when you're not too excited about it anymore — when not getting that thing would no longer make you sad.

When you want something badly — a job, a woman, money — and you're scrambling for it, you tend not to get it. Because you're desperate. When you want it the most, you tend not to get it. It's almost like it's coded into the very design of this game.

But when the years have gone by and you've made peace with not having the thing — when you've found happiness without it, without being desperate — that's when the thing comes walking to you.

There will be exceptions — sometimes you're excited and desperate and still get it. But that also means you'll be that much more prone to sadness when you lose it. And lose it, you will. Finding happiness and making peace has to happen first. Once you live happily, you become a magnet for the things you once wanted desperately.

Never be too sure about anything. The moment you're sure you've figured a person out, they'll betray you. The moment you're sure nothing can bring you down, you'll be brought down. Have confidence, but keep humility.

If we're living in a simulation — if this is really a video game — then the very design of life is to present us with puzzles, problems, and quests, to ensure we never fully figure it out. Because the moment you figure everything out, the game ends. There's no challenge anymore.

So you can't be too sure about any knowledge or understanding you have about the world. You can't be sure you've figured a person out — that they'll never betray you. The moment you're sure, the universe will smack you in the face, and they'll betray you. You can't be sure you've become so successful that nothing can bring you down. The moment you're sure, you'll be brought down.

I don't mean you shouldn't have confidence. Have confidence — but don't be cocksure about your achievements, about people, or about anything. Always keep some humility.

Once you thoroughly master this, you'll always be ready for challenges. I always say my life is awesome — but I'm also ready for the next problem, because I know it's coming. And that excites me. New challenges and new problems mean new levels. It means I'm progressing in the game.

People say death is the only certainty in life. I think it may actually be one of the least certain things. Every simulation we build exists for a purpose — someone is learning something. If learning is the purpose, then the idea that everything simply ends forever doesn't fit. Why would the simulation stop before its purpose is fulfilled?

If I told you that I don't believe death is real, you'd probably think I've lost my mind. That's fair — on the surface, it sounds absurd. People die every day. We lose our parents, grandparents, friends, and perhaps one day our own bodies. I'm not denying any of that. What I'm questioning is the assumption that death means the complete end of existence, where everything simply blacks out forever.

The foundation of my thinking is the simulation hypothesis. Every explanation for the ultimate nature of reality eventually reaches a point where certainty ends and belief begins. The rational thing is to hold the story that explains the most. For me, that's this one — and it has one more implication that most people miss.
